ORANA ART AND CLASSROOM BUILDING

Unbuilt
On a remarkable sloping site with a backdrop of Eucalyptus trees, the new Art and Classroom Block nestles into the landscape at Orana Steiner School, Weston.

The building is a freestanding single story learning space capable of accommodating 116 students. It includes two general learning spaces for primary level students, and two purpose-built art rooms. The art rooms are interconnecting to increase the flexibility of the spaces and allow for larger co-learning and exhibition opportunities. Spaces are designed to expand learning areas into the outdoors and includes an external amphitheatre and an external break out area.

The roof structure forms a canopy uniting both Art and General Learning Spaces and highlights the sense of community at Orana, while the external amphitheatre embraces a beautiful remnant Eucalyptus Yellow Box providing additional outdoor learning opportunities.

The rhythmic repetition of the exposed timber roof structure highlights the strength of nature and draws natural light through the learning spaces. Internally, a playful array of suspended pendant lighting and a well crafted and functional interior bring a sense of calm and form a canvas for learning. The Steiner philosophy is grounded in engaging students deeply in their learning and connecting them to the natural environment so that they become agile-thinkers, flexible problem-solvers and collaborators.
